Sunday Q&A (and favorite party dresses)

New edition is up (including my favorite party dresses!) Ask your new style/fashion/blogging/personal questions in the comments. If yours wasn't answered, you can always ask again :)

Nura said... How do you search for the perfect partydress/christmasdress? I don't want too Christmas or all black. I want a dress with a twist, not too expensive. Where do you find one?
My online stops for affordable party pieces are TopshopAsosCosNelly and Zara (all EU-based so I don’t have import taxes). Above I’ve put together a few favorites with a twist from Asos, starting at 15 pounds! Excuse the ugly collage, I haven't found a good program for Mac yet ;)

Jayvee Doroteo said... I have a really simple question. How tall are you? :)
An even simpler answer: I’m 1.62! Hence my extensive heel collection.

Mellisaphie said... What's your priority when buying shoes? Will you buy an awesome pair even they're painful? Will you settle for 1 or 2 sizes bigger of the last pair that you've desperate to find?
Ha! You got me! I just bought a pair that's perfect but pinches one of my toes. I've sworn not to buy uncomfortable shoes though - you never wear them so it's a waste of money. Sometimes I prioritize looks over comfort, but I would never go as far as going a whole size up or down. Uncomfortable maybe, but painful is never ok if you ask me :P

Annie said... This is such a sweet idea. love theQ&A and pictures of your icons.

How do you live? meaning by yourself, witha friend, in an apartment...?

Glad you like it! For the past 4 years I've been living in an apartment with my twin brother Milan. BUT... he's moving out in 3 weeks! So I'll be taking it over on my own and make a blog office in his room. You'll be updated on this big step, of course!

Michelle Lee said... What kind of music/artists do you listen to? :) I love music inspirations I guess it's b/c I sing. Do you sing too?
Only in the safety of my own home or on my bike, late at night, haha! I like UK artists like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Keane, Coldplay and James Morrison. Other favorite genres are soul or in between pop and R&B, like Gnarls Barkley, Erykah Badu, Leela James Beyonce, John Legend, Moby, John Mayer.

Sunday Q&A

New answers are up (with pictures of my style icons)! Ask your new style/fashion/blogging/personal questions in the comments :)

Tess said... Great idea :D Who are your style icons and why?
For inspiration on how to dress I usually look to women that have fun with clothes and look feminine yet laid back. Taylor Tomasi-Hill, Christine Centenera, Miroslava Duma, Ashley Olsen, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Poppy Delevigne, Jen Bril, Kate Bosworth and the 'French Voguettes' come to mind. I like looking at different women and getting inspired by certain elements of their style, rather than copying someone. Besides, what looks good on one person might be completely unflattering on myself. Next to that, bloggers like Elin Kling provide a great, daily source of inspiration.

Marloes said... Why and when did you start blogging? x
I started This chick’s got style almost 3 years ago, in February of 2009. (Wow, I can’t believe how long it’s been already!) I started blogging as something for myself, just because I was reading a lot of US and Scandinavian blogs at that time. I wanted to create my own place online where I could write and put together some sort of diary on fashion related topics. There weren’t that many Dutch fashion blogs yet, so it happened at a good time. I started blogging without a strategy and had no idea it would be so defining for my career and personal life.

Gabbiie said... How do you manage to go to school, blog and travel to all the events you go to, all at the same time? I know travelling can sometimes interfere with school.
Juggling university, blogging, travelling and other work commitments is one of the most difficult things right now. I want to do it all, and that means I’m always busy. Basically it’s about prioritizing: my degree will always come first and there have been times where I said no to an event or trip because of exams or deadlines. Luckily I’m almost done with school and at this stage I can be pretty flexible. So when I travel or go to events I plan it around my classes and work ahead for school and know everything will work out in the end.

Carla said... How do you stay fit & thin?
Dutch girls ride their bike everywhere, so that’s my daily little work out. Luckily I don’t have to pay much attention to staying in shape. Nonetheless, I want to take care of my body, but my irregular schedule often makes me skip on gym visits. (I try to go once a week). And despite my snack cravings – love to eat – I try to eat ‘real’ food and limit processed stuff with weird ingredients with names I can’t even pronounce :P

Sunday Q&A

Welcome to the first Sunday Q&A! Read some of the answers below and ask your questions for next week in the comments! :)

Malu Swartjes said... Do you get recognized often?
Usually just when I go to fashion events. It does happen sometimes when I’m out and about in Amsterdam, usually when I'm shopping or at university.

Michelle Lee said... Great idea. Your typical brunch?
Ideally: cheese cake / carrot cake / brownies / scones and tea. Realistically: I love fruit smoothies, so I’ll have a banana and strawberry smoothie or green tea. To eat I'll have toasted wholegrain bread with cheese or tuna salad or something, maybe some fruit like mango. Crackers or muesli also pass my plate every now and then.

Marie de Chine said... Who is behind the camera? ;-)
The blogger cliché: my lovely and supportive boyfriend Friso.

Eleni said... What do you study at the university? xx
Science of Communication. I’m now getting my Master’s degree in Corporate Communication. Just 3 months left before graduation! All that’s left now is thesis writing until Februari (and yes… it’s about blogs!)

LOIS said... How did you end up in the fashion industry?
Ok… this is a long answer!
I always had a huge interest in fashion, in text, in magazines and in media in general. My parents both have their own communication company so growing up I was surrounded by people that put knowledge about writing, branding and communication in to practice. (As a kid I said that I would NEVER follow their footsteps, yet here I am). At the age of 14 I started working for my dad, who is actually Holland’s bestseller in communication books (some of the books he wrote are Basisboek Communicatie, Communicatie Handboek, Communicatiemanagement and Brand-id). I’m so proud of them and they’ve always guided me to reach my goals.

At 17 I chose to study Science of Communication because it suited my interest in media. In the third year I landed an internship at Grazia magazine as an editor and that learned me a lot. I did my first interviews, wrote articles, had to be independent yet work in a professional team and got to see how a magazine works. A year later I took a break from my Master to do a second internship at ELLE (where I was writing). Which was one of the best experiences and biggest adventures I've ever had. I’m very happy to be back there when I graduate soon!

Girl in the poodle shoes said... Where is the skirt in this photo from??? I am backlogging to see if its here! Love it, what a fabulous idea.
Thanks dear! And the skirt is from Zara.

Anonymous said... Hi, do you feel there is an unspoken pressure for fashion bloggers to remain a certain size? I follow blogs to see how items of clothing from certain labels translate into everyday! It is more real than editorials and you get great inspiration! Thanks.
Hi anonymous. Personally, I would want to be fit and work out a little whether I was blogging or not. But I agree; lot of fashion bloggers are a certain size. (Just as most girls we see in mass media these days). However, there are succesful blogs by more full figured girls as well. To me, what makes blogs interesting is the diversity in styles, opinions, lifestyles and also in body shape.

Q&A!

Let me introduce you to a little experiment during November. A new weekly category on This chick's got style called: the Sunday Q&A!

Since I get quite a lot of reader questions via e-mail, comments and Twitter and can't always answer them, I figured why not make it a reoccuring theme on my blog? This means every Sunday I'll answer a bunch of questions about blogging/fashion/random stuff/my personal life. In the comments of that post, you can ask your new questions for the following Sunday QA (get it?). We're starting TODAY.. So shoot!
